The Community Economic Development (CED) program is supporting efforts to empower workers by revitalizing energy communities, communities that have experienced employment loss and/or economic dislocation events because of declines in the fossil fuel industry. As energy communities face changing economies, the CED program continues to support the creation and expansion of business and employment opportunities to replace employment lost in fossil fuel industries in these hard-hit communities. See how CED funding has been transforming energy communities and transitioning their economies from oil and coal to new markets.
CED Grants Serving Energy Communities

As of May 2024, there are 18 active CED projects serving energy communities. Combined, these projects are:
- Representing over $14.5 million in grant funding
- Creating or expanding 38 businesses
- Creating 629 new jobs, with 495 of those jobs being created for individuals with low income
- Leveraging nearly $84M from additional sources into these communities
