The Office of Family Assistance (OFA) has released a new request for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) pilot applications. Authorized under the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) of 2023, the redesigned pilot reflects the Trump Administration’s commitment to reshaping TANF programs to encourage employment, personal responsibility, and strong families. The application will allow states to propose alternative performance measures that prioritize employment outcomes, earnings progression, and reduced reliance on TANF, Medicaid, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits — rather than the current work participation rates.
The pilot program will operate for six years, with the first year dedicated to establishing baseline data and negotiating performance targets. OFA encourages all states and territories to apply. The application period will close at 11:59PM ET on August 15, 2025.
Further information on the TANF pilot program can be found on OFA's Fiscal Responsibility Act implementation page. If questions remain, please contact: TANFquestions@acf.hhs.gov
