How OFVPS funds shelter, crisis response, and prevention services nationwide

The Office of Family Violence Prevention and Services (OFVPS) administers grant funding under the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA), enacted in 1984 as part of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (42 U.S.C. § 10401—10414). FVPSA funds the national response system that provides crisis services and shelter to people experiencing domestic or dating violence, and their dependents.

A note on terminology: FVPSA originally used "family violence" to mean what is now more commonly called domestic violence and dating violence — the same terms used in the Violence Against Women Act and the Victims of Crime Act.

What OFVPS Funding Supports

OFVPS grants fund programs that:

  • Provide immediate shelter and supportive services for survivors of domestic or dating violence and their dependents

  • Increase public awareness and prevention of domestic and dating violence

  • Operate the National Domestic Violence Hotline

  • Provide specialized services to abused parents and their children

  • Deliver training and technical assistance to public agencies, non-profits, and tribal organizations — including support for state domestic violence coalitions and national resource centers

These grants put resources directly into the hands of communities, strengthening local services while also funding prevention and public awareness work.
