Introduction
The Early Care and Education Study—ExCELS, for short—developed a measure of leadership. The measure is for use in center-based early care and education settings (serving children birth through age 5, not yet in kindergarten). This guide provides information on the administration and scoring of the ExCELS measure. The appendices to the guide include surveys used to produce the ExCELS measure.
Purpose
This guide provides information to support users in administering and scoring the ExCELS measure.
Key Findings and Highlights
This guide provides instructions for (1) administering the ExCELS measure surveys to center staff, (2) scoring the ExCELS measure, and (3) using the ExCELS measure scoring template. The final section of the guide includes the templates for scoring the measure.
Instruments are included in the appendices that are linked below. The teaching staff and center manager surveys are the core instruments of the ExCELS measure (Appendices A and B). The Staffing Positions and Management Responsibilities interview guide is an optional, supplementary instrument for those interested in collecting information about formal management positions, roles, and structures, in center-based settings (Appendix C).
