Slide Deck: What were Characteristics of Child Care and Early Education Providers and Teachers across the United States in 2019? (PPTX)

Introduction

The CCEEPRA Research Translation team developed slides to help state and territory child care and early education (CCEE) leaders provide national information about the characteristics of CCEE providers and teachers. Most of the data come from the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE) 2019.

The slides are organized into four sections, using these questions:

  1. What were the number and characteristics of center- and home-based CCEE providers in 2019?
    • Slides define and include national estimates of center- and various types of home-based providers.
  2. What were the characteristics of care provided in 2019?
    • Slides provide information on the number of children in different types of care.
  3. What sources of revenue supported providers in 2019?
    • Slides present information about types of revenue sources for center-based programs and different types for home-based providers.
  4. What were the demographic and economic characteristics of the center- and home-based CCEE workforce in 2019?
    • Slides provide information about center and home-based CCEE workforce race/ethnicity, wages, health insurance, and related economic indicators.

How to use the slides

  • You can use just a few or several slides to provide national information about a topic. Each slide includes notes with additional information and possible talking points.

  • You may find it useful to show these national slides along with slides about information from your own state to help highlight similarities and differences. For example, these slides could provide national information to help contextualize state data about:

    • How many CCEE center-based programs and home-based providers are there? (Slides 8 and 9)

    • How many children, ages 0 to 5, were in center-based programs in 2019? How many were cared for by home-based providers? (Slide 11)

    • What percentage of center-based programs received state funds? (Slide 15)

    • What percentage of centers were not-for-profit? (Slide 17)

    • What was the racial and ethnic composition of the CCEE home-based workforce in 2019? (Slide 22)

    • What were the hourly wages for CCEE providers and teachers in 2019? (Slide 23)

    • What percentage of CCEE providers and teachers receive health insurance benefits? (Slide 24)

  • If you’re interested in more information on these topics, there are many public reports about the NSECE findings. References can be found on Slide 29 and links to websites on Slide 30.

Methods

The CCEEPRA Research Translation team primarily used analyses of the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE) 2019 to develop these slides describing the child care and early education (CCEE) workforce prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other sources of data were used as well.

  • A total of 4,709 center-based workers across 6,917 centers and 5,901 home-based providers completed a survey as part of the NSECE 2019 study.
