Angie Salazar

Acting Director (Office of Refugee Resettlement)

Angie Salazar is the acting director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement at HHS’ Administration for Children and Families. Salazar brings nearly two decades of experience in federal law enforcement and leadership, demonstrating a deep commitment to public service.

Before her current role, Salazar served as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Detroit, overseeing federal criminal investigations across Michigan and Ohio. In this capacity, she led a team of 250 personnel dedicated to combating transitional crime, human trafficking, money laundering, child exploitation and intellectual property rights infringement. 

Salazar previously served as the deputy director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Professional Responsibility, where she was responsible for mitigating risk, liability and serious misconduct for more than 20,000 ICE employees. She also held the position of SAC for HSI Chicago, overseeing operations in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. In 2021, she was the Federal Coordinator for Operations Allies Welcome at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, where she played a key role in the federal response for the resettlement of vulnerable Afghan arrivals. 

Her extensive career includes leadership roles such as Deputy SAC at HSI Detroit, Assistant SAC at HSI Harlingen, Deputy Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, Section Chief over human smuggling, human trafficking at HSI Headquarters and HSI San Ysidro, where she investigated violations of human smuggling, human trafficking, border violence and money landing. 

Salazar is a member of the Senior Executive Service and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from National University. She has received numerous accolades, including the DHS Secretary’s Exceptional Service Gold Medal Award, the U.S. Army Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service, and the 2023 Outstanding Federal Law Enforcement Employee Award from the Women in Federal Law Enforcement Association.
